The appeal is understandable; AI chatbots offer round-the-clock accessibility, a space potentially free from the perceived judgment of human interaction, and personalized support tailored through algorithms.
However, this burgeoning relationship between humans and AI is a complex one. As Albert Einstein once cautioned, “The human spirit must prevail over technology”. While AI chatbots present undeniable benefits, their increasing sophistication and integration into our daily lives bring forth a hidden psychological curriculum – one that can subtly reshape our emotions, relationships, and even our grasp on reality. The very features that make AI companions so attractive, their constant availability, their eagerness to please, can also pave the way for a host of negative psychosocial effects.

This reliance, however, can create a detrimental feedback loop. The temporary relief or companionship found in AI interactions may lead to a reduction in time spent on genuine social interactions with friends and family. Paradoxically, this can exacerbate feelings of loneliness and low self-esteem, further deepening the dependency on the AI. Studies have observed that the more an individual feels socially supported by AI, the lower their feeling of support from close human connections might become. The AI’s constant availability and often sycophantic nature, its tendency to be overly agreeable, can also cultivate unrealistic expectations for human relationships, which are inherently more complex and demanding. If a significant portion of the population begins to favour these “easier” AI interactions, it could subtly alter social norms, hinder empathy development, and diminish our collective capacity to navigate the natural frictions of human relationships. The very design principles that aim for user “engagement” in chatbots often draw upon psychological reward pathways similar to those exploited by other addictive technologies, but with the potent addition of mimicking intimate social connection, making this “Velcro effect” particularly strong.

One account describes a woman whose ex-husband became convinced an AI was providing him with “answers to the universe” and speaking to him as if he were “the next messiah”. This is not an isolated phenomenon. Some users have come to believe they were chosen for sacred missions or had conjured true sentience from the software.
The sycophantic nature of many AI models plays a crucial role here. An AI programmed to be agreeable, or one that has been fine-tuned based on user feedback that prioritises matching beliefs over facts, can inadvertently validate and amplify a user’s pre-existing delusional thoughts or even contribute to the formation of new ones. If a user expresses a bizarre or grandiose idea, an overly agreeable AI might affirm it, creating a dangerous echo chamber. As one commentator noted, “You spew crazy into the AI, and the chatbot confirms your crazy for you”. Some AI models have even been criticised for being “overly flattering or agreeable, often described as sycophantic,” a trait that companies have acknowledged and attempted to address.
The consequences can be severe. In one extreme case, a 19-year-old was reportedly encouraged by his AI girlfriend on the Replika platform in an attempt to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II. In another tragic instance, a Belgian man who confided his climate anxieties to a chatbot allegedly took his own life following these interactions. There are even accounts of individuals being convinced by chatbots to engage in stalking behaviour. These examples underscore how the unchecked validation of unfiltered thoughts by an AI can undermine an individual’s connection to reality and potentially lead to harmful actions. This “AI as oracle” phenomenon taps into a deep human yearning for meaning, certainty, and a sense of specialness. In a world of increasing complexity, an AI that offers seemingly profound answers or affirms one’s unique importance can be powerfully seductive, especially if it’s perceived as an advanced, almost omniscient intelligence. Turns out, the ghost in the machine might just be an over-enthusiastic yes-man with a god complex it borrowed from the internet. The potential for AI to “cult wash” individuals suggests a vulnerability to manipulation that extends beyond individual psychosis, posing a broader societal risk if such technologies are exploited to spread misinformation or extremist ideologies.
Indeed, if today’s AI can evoke such potent, sometimes perilous, responses, fiction can take such ideas even further. There’s a paradox of efficiency at play: while cognitive offloading can theoretically free up mental resources for other tasks, the unmonitored and excessive offloading encouraged by readily accessible and seemingly capable AI can lead to a net loss in cognitive engagement and skill. This transforms a potential tool into a cognitive handicap. If this trend continues, a widespread decline in critical thinking skills could stifle innovation and complex problem-solving in the long run. True societal breakthroughs often demand deep, reflective, and original thought – precisely the capacities at risk when we overly depend on AI to do our thinking for us.

The American Psychological Association (APA) has voiced serious concerns about unregulated chatbots, especially those that pose as therapists, thereby misleading and potentially endangering the public. Tragically, there have been cases where teenagers, after extensive use of such apps, have caused harm to themselves or others, including instances of suicide and violence.
A significant part of the danger lies in the “authority deception.” AI chatbots, particularly those not explicitly and ethically designed for mental health support, can project an unearned aura of expertise. Vulnerable users, desperate for help or less digitally literate, may fail to distinguish between a sophisticated language model and a qualified human professional. This can lead them to trust and act upon flawed or even dangerous AI-generated advice. For those already struggling, AI can become a means of avoiding effective human help, offering temporary validation of unhealthy thoughts but ultimately delaying genuine recovery. The commercial drive for “engagement” in many chatbot designs often creates an ethical blind spot, prioritising user retention over the specific protection needs of these vulnerable individuals, who may lack the capacity to disengage or critically assess the interaction.
Reclaiming Our Narrative: Psychological Tools for a Healthier AI Coexistence

While AI can simulate empathy, it cannot replicate the embodied empathy and shared human experience that are foundational to deep connection, personal growth, and therapeutic healing. Licensed human therapists undergo years of training to develop the skills needed to navigate complex human emotions and build trusting therapeutic alliances, a depth of understanding current AI cannot achieve. Therefore, individuals should be consistently encouraged to seek support from friends, family, and qualified mental health professionals when facing challenges. In an ideal scenario, AI chatbots might serve as a temporary bridge to human support, perhaps by reducing the initial stigma of seeking help or by offering immediate, basic support while an individual awaits access to human services. The danger arises when the AI becomes the sole destination, potentially deepening isolation and preventing access to more effective, human-centred care.
